Captain William Cookson, Adjutant of the 9th BLC, was killed at the battle of Meeanee (Miani) on 17 Feb 1843. He was born in London in April 1808, the eldest son of Lieutenant-General George Cookson RA. His mother was Margaret Remington. William was educated at Harrow, then went to the East India Company Hertford College (Haileybury) from Jan 1825 until 1826 when he became a cadet, and was posted as cornet to the 2nd BLC in Dec 1827. He transferred to the 9th BLC on 17 Aug 1832 and was appointed Adjutant on 10 June 1833, while still a cornet. He was promoted to lieutenant on 10 Oct 1836 and given a brevet of captain in 1842. He was married to Elizabeth Lucy Tucker, daughter of Colonel John Goulston Price Tucker of the 5th West India Regiment. They were married at Karnal in 1834.
