8th Gurkha Rifles

Gurkhas 1834

This watercolour is dated 11 October 1834 and depicts Gurkhas of the Sabathu Battalion who later became the 1st Gurkha Rifles. But the basic pattern of the uniform would have been worn by other Gurkhas and light infantry. The bell-topped shakos were probably not worn on campaign. Later photos show a lower peakless cap with a covering for hot or wet weather. The regimental history says that the Kilmarnock cap was adopted in 1844.
