British Empire Title

8th Bengal Light Cavalry

Charles Gough VC

Officers of the disbanded Bengal Light Cavalry were formed into European Cavalry regiments to take part in operations against the mutineers in 1857-58. Charles Gough, a lieutenant in the 8th BLC first joined the 5th European Light Cavalry and won his first VC citation at Khurkowdah on 15 Aug 1857. It is this action which is depicted here, where he rescued his brother Hugh Gough. The officers on the left of the picture appear to wear the uniforms of Hodson’s Horse. Charles Gough joined that regiment on 6 Dec 1857 after a short spell with the Guides at Delhi.
