The figure is taken from a composite print of Indian cavalry regiments published in 1857. The uniforms in this print are not particularly accurate but give an idea of the style of dress, in this case, of an Indian cavalry trumpeter. The straight sided shako was worn by the Indian ranks, decorated with a white tasselled festoon and having a black boss or rosette on the top. It looks as if he has a peak but most prints of the BLC show a peakless headdress. His French grey jacket is waist-length and decorated with white braid. mostly on the front, but showing at the back as well. The collar and cuffs were orange.
His pouch-belt is black with silver buckle, tip and slide. The belt is adapted for clipping a carbine but he would be armed with only a sword and pistols. The trumpet has cords and tassels and would be slung over his shoulder with a matching cord. His trousers are dark blue with a red stripe down the side.
