The bell-shaped shako worn by British officers of the Bengal Light Cavalry followed a similar pattern for all 10 regiments. The shako was introduced c1815, initially not so bell-shaped. The badge was star shaped at first, but in 1835 was changed to the Maltese Cross type seen here. The 8th were identified by the gilt numeral in the middle and the battle honour BHURTPORE on a gilt garter around the number. The badge was basically gilt with silver hobnails inside the arms of the cross, and on the domed centre. The broad oak-leaf pattern lace around the top is silver but the plaited cord festoon is gold.
