British Empire Title

7th Bengal Light Cavalry

Troops in Camp 1834

This hand coloured lithograph is one of a series produced by Captain William Andrew Ludlow who served in the 12th Bengal NI. The soldiers are on campaign in 1834, probably the Shekhawat expedition. Troopers of the Bengal Light Cavalry are watering their horses in the foreground, wearing blue shell jackets and pouch-belts. The unruly grey horse is probably an officer’s charger, with a blue and yellow saddle-cloth or shabraque. Bhistis (water-carriers) fill up their containers and one is giving a drink to an infantryman.
