This is a detail from a Henry Martens painting of Captain Thomas Lowth Harington as a mounted officer of the 5th BLC. The sabretache agrees with a drawing of the same pattern and can be taken as accurate. It has a dark blue face and is surrounded by silver lace. The title of the regiment is shown with a V and decorative BLC, all in silver embroidery. There are three battle honours; at the top is JELLALABAD in silver with a gold mural crown beneath. Below the BLC is a scroll CABOOL 1842 in silver, and on the silver lace at the base of the sabretache is PUNNIAR in gold. Jellalabad and Cabool were gained after the 1st Afghan War and were granted on 4 Oct 1842. In the Gwalior Campaign the regiment fought at Punniar while on the same day (29 Dec 1843) a detachment of the 5th BLC fought at Maharajpore, 20 miles away. The British officers who fought at the latter engagement would have had MAHARAJPOOR in gold on the base of their sabretaches. The battle honours for the Gwalior campaign were granted on 4 Jan 1844 so the sabretache dates after that. Harington was promoted to captain on 6 March 1846.
