Arthur Hall was born in Oxford on 25 Nov 1809. He was the son of the Very Reverend Charles Henry Hall, dean of Christ Church, Oxford, later Dean of Durham. His mother was Anna Maria Bridget Hall. Arthur was educated at Westminster School from 1822, and was a cadet in 1827, arriving in India on 5 July 1828. Initially he was a cornet in the 2nd Bengal Light Cavalry from 31 July 1828 but posted to the 5th BLC on 16 July 1829. He was appointed Acting Adjutant on 19 Mar 1834, promoted to lieutenant on 1 Mar 1836. On 24 April 1837 he was Sub-Assistant in the Stud Department, and, having been promoted to captain in Jan 1842, he became 2nd Assistant from 7 July 1843 to Dec 1849.
In the Second Sikh War he served with the 5th BLC at Ramnuggur, Sadalapur, Chillianwallah and Gujerat. He went on furlough from Feb 1850 to March 1853, promoted to major on 14 Nov 1853, and with the rank of lieutenant-colonel was appointed CO of the 5th in May 1856, but was on furlough again from 30 Dec 1856 until 1859. After the Mutiny he transferred to the 3rd European Bengal Light Cavalry in 1859. He was married to Anne Mackenzie at Ghazipur on 3 Oct 1842. He retired on 31 Dec 1861 with the honorary rank of major general, and died at his home, St George’s Manor, Guernsey, on 13 Nov 1879.
