This contemporary print was based on a sketch by Lieutenant W S Simmons of HM 29th Regiment of Foot. titled ‘Battle of Goojrat: From the rear of Lt-General Sir Walter Gilbert GCB’s Division Shewing the attack of the village of Kalra by his right & the advance of his left Brigade, also a small party of Sikh and Afghan horse who broke through & charged along the rear of the line’
General Gilbert commanded the 2nd Infantry Division which consisted of Penny’s Brigade: 2nd Bengal European Fusiliers, 31st and 70th Bengal NI. And Mountain’s Brigade: HM 29th Foot, 30th and 56th Bengal NI. Sir Hugh Gough and his staff were placed behind this line of brigades so he would have been in danger from the Sikh and Afghan horsemen. It would have been these that Lieutenant Stannus and the bodyguard of men from the 5th BLC, fought against and drove off. Various Troops of Horse Artillery can be seen in front of the infantry, and one of the limbers exploding. The men in the foreground under attack from the Sikh horseman dressed in chainmail, are Horse Artillery gunners. The Sikh army of Shere Singh can be seen deployed in the distance, in front of the fortress.
