3rd Bengal Light Cavalry

A contemporary sketch of a sowar of the Bengal Light Cavalry. He is armed with a carbine as well as a sword and two pistols. The Bengal Army List of 1838 states that a regiment of Light Cavalry consists of 3 squadrons or 6 Troops: each Troop consists of one Subadar, one Jemadar, 5 havildars, four naiks, one trumpeter and 70 troopers. The havildars, naiks and trumpeter each armed with a Royal pattern cavalry sword and a pair of pistols, and 15 men of each Troop carry a carbine in addition to a sword and two pistols.
