Captain Arthur Beckham was killed in the Second Battle of Ypres on 26 April 1915. The Germans had used gas to poison the French army and created a dangerous gap in the line. The Lahore Division was sent in to stem the tide of German troops and on that day many were killed and wounded. The 34th Sikh Pioneers were part of this Division, and Captain Beckham of the 32nd Sikh Pioneers was attached to the 34th.
Arthur Thomas Grafton Beckham was born on 1 Nov 1886, in Poona. He was the son of Colonel Lionel Grafton Beckham and Constance Emily née Pemberton. He was sent back to England to be educated at Wellington College. After Sandhurst he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 32nd Sikh Pioneers on 5 Aug 1905.
In 1911–12 he was a lieutenant with his regiment for the expedition to Abor led by Lieutenant-Colonel F. H. Peterson. After service in India he was attached to the 34th Sikh Pioneers and went with them to France in 1915 while his own regiment went to Mesopotamia. Captain Beckham was buried in Ypres Town Cemetery Extension. His grave is next to the CO of the 32nd, Colonel F. H. Peterson.
