A R Heyland commanded the 1st Bombay Lancers on campaign in the Third Burma War of 1885 to 87. He wrote ‘Notes on Cavalry Employed in Upper Burma from October 1886 to October 1887’. He joined the 1st Bombay Cavalry after the Indian Mutiny and was a lieutenant in the regiment on 8 Mar 1861, appointed 1st Squadron subaltern on 19 Oct 1865. In 1870 he was officiating Adjutant, promoted to captain on 31 Dec. On 26 May 1876 he was appointed Adjutant and officiating 2nd in command. He was promoted to major on 31 Dec 1878 and appointed Brigade Major of the Deesa Field Force. In 1882 he was Deputy Assistant Adjutant General for Sind District, but on 12 Oct he was appointed Commandant of his regiment with the rank of lieutenant-colonel made official on 31 Dec 1884. The photo shows him as a captain in the green uniform of the 1st Bombay Lancers in 1878.
