The drill order around this time was the khaki kurta, or blouse, worn with the red kummerbund and sword belt. However, these men are unarmed apart from the lances. The usual lance carried was 9 foot long with a red and white pennon, but these lances are shorter and clearly designed for the traditional sport of British India, pig-sticking. Drill order also included a ‘plain lungi’ with the red and gold kulla which would suggest a khaki lungi (turban). This British officer and the three men all have the dress lungi.
