Adam Duffin was born in March 1789 in Drumglass, County Tyrone. He entered the 2nd Bengal Native Cavalry, serving in Nepal in 1814, and fought in the Mahratta-Pindari war of 1817. He was married to Mary Hickman at Muttra, 10th August 1815. George Lawrence wrote that Colonel Adam Duffin was the first officer to die on the journey to Kabul at the start of the 1st Afghan War, ‘I attended him in his last moments, and buried him at Ahmedpore.’
Lieutenant Colonel Duffin’s grave at Bahawalpur is inscribed: "Sacred to the memory of Lt Col Adam Duffin 2nd Bengal Cavalry who departed this life on the Sutlej the 28th December 1838 aged 50. This tomb was erected as a tribute of respect to the character of the deceased by the officers of his regt, the Commander in chief in India and the officers of the army of the Indus."
