The battle for Toulon in 1793 was made famous as the battle where Napoleon came to prominence as a leader. He commanded artillery on the height of Arenes, requisitioning all the guns he could lay his hands on in the area. This cartoon by George Cruikshank shows him firing a mortar at Fort Mulgrave.
