Alexander Barry Montgomery was commissioned as an ensign in the Royal Regiment on 25 Nov 1824. He served in the First Burma War 1824-26 and was a lieutenant on 30 Oct 1826. He gained the rank of captain on 16 Aug 1833 and major on 5 Dec 1843. He was the senior major in the 1st Battalion at Alma, Inkerman and the siege of Sevastopol. He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in March 1855 and commanded the 1st Battalion for 11 years. The photo shows him in a group of officers at Kamptee, India in 1865. He retired on full pay in January 1866, awarded the CB, and died at Stuke, Devonport on 17 Oct 1869.
