British Empire Title

1st or Royal Regiment of Foot (Royal Scots)

Colours c1840

This illustration of Royal Regiment Colours was published in Cannon’s history of the Royal Regiment in 1847. They date after 1837 because the cypher in the centre of each Colour is VR for Victoria. Both Colours have 15 battle honours emblazoned, including EGYPT and the Sphinx, repeated on the other side. In 1844 regiments were ordered to discontinue the practice of putting honours on the Queen’s Colour. There is no indication as to which of the two battalions these belonged. The size of each flag is 6 ft 6 ins wide by 6ft deep.
