The Regimental Colour that was displayed at Edinburgh Castle in 2015 shows the collar of the Order of the Thistle painted in intricate detail in gold, around the GP reverse cypher of the Prince Regent. The battle honours for PENINSULA and NIAGARA are on red scrolls either side, and the Sphinx, faded, sits below the St Andrew pendant. The three part scroll below this has the title THE ROYAL SCOTS which was officially recognised from 1812 to 1821 in which year the title reverted to The 1st Royal Regiment, retained for 50 years until 1871 when it was again titled The 1st or the Royal Scots Regiment.
What cannot be seen in this detail is the ‘IIId BATTN’ inscribed on the small Union flag, and the large WATERLOO at the base of the Colour, with laurel sprays above and below. These Colours were presented to the 3rd Battalion at some time in 1816 and not, as some claim, carried at Waterloo.
