The actual ‘Waterloo Colours’ of the 3rd Battalion Royal Scots were put on display at Edinburgh Castle in 2015 for the last time, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The details, discussed in the previous image, are faded but the central device can be seen clearly. The design in the middle of the collar of the Order of the Thistle is a reverse Georgian cypher. At the time that these Colours were produced the Prince Regent was ruling. The cypher of George III was GR, not reversed, so this must be the Prince Regent’s cypher. But he could not be Georgius Rex like his father so this is GP, Georgius Princeps. However, the crown above the collar is the King’s crown, not a Princely crown. The other point of interest is the style of rose on the Union wreath below the collar. It should be a Tudor rose which is a combination of white and red but here the roses are red only with a yellow centre. The illustration below is included to show the salient points of the design although there are inaccuracies that become evident when it is compared with the actual King’s Colour.
