The bandsmen wear the 1869 -78 pattern shako which has a red worsted ball on the top as worn by all ranks of the Royal regiments. This shako was replaced by the blue helmet in 1878. The bandsman on the left holds a euphonium and wears a scarlet dress tunic with blue facings. The band had shoulder wings which were blue with white tape stripes and edging. His pointed cuffs are in the 1870 tunic pattern, having a white edge with a trefoil at the point. The style changed in 1873 when the cuff facings became half panels reaching from seam to seam and the collar had a facing patch on the front.
The band sergeant on the right has gold lace instead of white on his shoulder wings, cuffs and the top edge of his collar. There is gold braid on the blue cuffs. The sergeant has a long sword hanging from his white leather waist-belt, while the other musician has a shorter sword. Both men have collar badges which may have been simple brass crowns at that stage.The regiment were called the 1st or Royal Scots from 1871.
