When the uniform changed in 1855 from the coatee to the tunic, the sword was suspended from a white leather waist-belt instead of a wide shoulder belt. The waist-belt clasp was in two parts; the centre circle with the silver figure of St Andrew slotted into the circular strap inscribed THE ROYAL REGIMENT. In 1871 the title of the regiment was changed to The Royal Scots and the wording around the strap was changed so that THE ROYAL SCOTS extended across the top part and REGIMENT across the lower half (see below). In 1874 the regiment was permitted to wear a gold laced belt for full dress occasions, using the same clasp. The changes of 1881 allowed the regiment to adopt the Scottish doublet and trews, so that a rectangular belt plate was worn.
