The gilt figure of St Andrew on a blue enamel background indicates that this is the forage cap badge worn by officers of the 1st Battalion. The officers of the 2nd Battalion had the same pattern but with a green enamel background. Group photos of officers of the 1st Battalion in India in 1865 and the 2nd Battalion in Aldershot in 1863 both show the undress cap with a badge above an embroidered 1.
