Officer’s Shako Plate 1861

The infantry shako was redesigned in 1861 and this gilt badge was worn by officers. It is smaller than the previous plate but still has the universal star as the backing to the collar and pendant of the Order of the Thistle. The royal VR cypher is in the centre with a foliated 1 beneath. Above the collar is a scroll with ROYAL REGIMENT inscribed. This badge was worn until another change of shako design in 1869. The photo is from the Bosley auction catalogue of December 2003.
