The gilt star badge has the badge of the Order of the Thistle at the centre. St Andrew and his cross are in silver on blue enamel inside the gilt pierced collar of the Order. The badge is surmounted by Queen Victoria’s crown in gilt. This badge was introduced at the same time as the new style of shako in 1855 which was inspired by the French army in the Crimea.
