An Order from Horse Guards dated 22 Feb 1839 abolished the large star plate for other ranks on the bell-topped shako in favour of this pattern. The stringed bugle identifies it as a light company plate. Battalion companies had the same basic design but with a numeral only. The grenadier company had a flaming grenade over 1. These plates were worn on both the bell-topped shako and the Albert shako, until 1855.
