The two gilt buttons have central royal cyphers, George IV on the left-hand button, a drawing from Major Parkyn’s book, and William IV on the right. Both cyphers have a 1 underneath, and the collar and pendant of the Order of the Thistle surrounding. The star pendant separates the word ‘Royal’ which was unsatisfactory, so that the word was moved above the star in 1859, only a year before the pattern was changed to the one shown further on this page.
