Officer’s Shako Plate 1829

This contemporary illustration, reproduced in the MHS Infantry Shako booklet, shows the officer’s shako plate introduced in 1829. The badge worn previous to this is not known to me. The design is similar to that of the shoulder-belt plate, having the battle honours displayed on the rays emitting from the circular collar of the Order of the Thistle. The cypher in the middle is that of King George IV, thus rendering it obsolete when William IV acceded to the throne on 26 June 1830.
