The first actual example of a 1st Regiment officer’s shoulder-belt plate is all gilt, being a rectangular burnished plate with the device on a domed disc. The regimental title ‘The Royal Scots’ was granted in 1812 and is inscribed on a scroll at the top. A Union wreath of thistles roses and shamrocks surrounds elements of the Order of the Thistle and George III’s GR cypher. The Sphinx is surrounded by battle honours for NIAGARA, EGYPT, PENINSULA and WATERLOO.
