The earliest evidence of the 1st Royal Regiment’s badge is on the shoulder-belt plate of this officer. The enlarged detail of the print drawn by Edward Dayes, published in December 1792, shows an oval gilt plate with the star of the Order of the Thistle. This order was officially instituted in 1687. Parkyn’s book on Shoulder-Belt Plates and Buttons mentions this belt plate, but without reference to the Dayes print.
