This illustration is from Major Parkyn’s book, Shoulder-Belt Plates and Buttons. It is a pewter button for other ranks of the 1st Royal Regiment. A gilt-faced bone-backed button of similar design was worn by officers, dated c1780. The 1792 prints by Dayes, on this page, show the officer and private with buttons marked with a simple 1.
