Simkin’s illustration of an officer of the Royal Regiment shows the dress uniform seen in the group photo of 1863. The single-breasted tunic with the slashed cuffs was worn by the line infantry from 1856 to 1868. It had dark blue facings and gold lace on the collar, and on the three button loops on the blue cuff slash. As a captain he has an embroidered crown and star on each side of his collar and gold lace along the top and front of the collar, and along the top of his cuff. White piping traced the edge of the collar and cuff slash. At the back of the tunic, on the skirts were scarlet flaps with lace edges and two buttons each.
His sword is suspended from an enamelled white leather waist-belt with a regimental clasp. This was ordered to be worn in all orders of dress until 1874 when they were allowed to have a gold-laced full dress belt. The trousers are, according to the 1864 Dress Regulations,’Oxford mixture cloth’ for winter wear. In summer (1st May until 14th October) they had trousers ‘Oxford mixture tartan serge’. Both trousers had a quarter inch scarlet welt.
