In 1831 Joseph Cowell produced a series of coloured plates illustrating the patterns of uniforms worn by various officers in the British Army. No.31 out of 38 plates was this print of the 1st Royal Regiment. Up until the reign of William IV the Royal Regiment had two types of dress coat, one with gold lace, the other with gold embroidery. Around this time, the gold lace coat was discontinued and the regiment retained the embroidered pattern only. The style adopted in the 1830s was less costly as there were no embroidered lapels. This illustration shows the false pocket flaps on the tails with embroidered loops.
