This battalion company private is one of the prints published in The Cloathing Book of 1742. The coat is red with blue facings which show as broad lapels buttoned back, large cuffs and turn-backs at the front and back of the skirt. The coat and red waistcoat are unbuttoned to the waist. The breeches are red and the lower legs have white gaiters for parade wear. Black gaiters were worn on exercise and campaign. Most of the other infantry regiments of the line clothed the Privates and Corporals with special patterns on the lace that ornamented the buttonholes but the Royal Regiment of Foot (Sinclair’s), like the Guards, had plain white lace as a sign of seniority. He is armed with a muzzle-loading flintlock musket, carrying up to 36 rounds of ammunition. His buff waist-belt supports a sword and 17 inch socket bayonet, and his broad shoulder-belt has an ammunition pouch suspended on the right hip.
