By 1678 the role of the infantry had changed so that every man was armed with a musket. Pikes had all but disappeared but an extra company was added to the existing 12; a company of grenadiers. These soldiers were armed with musket, bayonet, sword, hatchet and three hand grenades. They were picked men and expected to set an example to the rest of the battalion. This modern illustration by Bob Marrion follows the description in Nathan’s Army List of 1684 of Dumbarton’s Regiment as having red coats with white cuffs. The buttonhole loops were white, edged blue and the buttons were pewter. Breeches and stockings were grey. The cloth grenadier cap was red with white turned up front which had an embroidered lion’s head. Belts were of buff leather. This grenadier holds a flintlock musket and carries 25 rounds of ball ammunition. From 1686 the ammunition was paper cartridges.
