Thomas Brown was born c1760, became a cadet on 8 Dec 1775 and was a cornet on 14 Sep 1779. By 22 Jan 1802 he had reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel, commanding the 2nd BLC in operations in Jumna Doab 1802-3, at Sasni, Bijaigarh, and Kachaura. He also commanded the 2nd in the Second Maharatta War, at the sieges of Aligarh and Agra, also at Koil, Delhi and Laswarri. He was in command of a cavalry brigade at Deig, Bhurtpore and Afzalgarh.
In 1807 he was appointed to command the 1st BLC and led them in Bundelkhand in 1810-11 where they defeated Gopal Singh at Bichaund on 19 Mar 1811. He commanded the covering force at the reduction of Kalinjar in 1812. There was further active service at the siege of Hathras, and in the Third Maharatta War he commanded the cavalry and, with the rank of major-general, was in charge of the centre division of the Grand Army. In 1818 the regiment pursued the Pindaris and a detached force under his command captured Jawad on 29 Jan 1818. He was appointed to the command of the Dinapore Division, then he was commandant at Buxar from 26 Aug 1822. He was appointed KCB on 23 July 1823 and promoted to lieutenant general on 27 May 1825. Sir Thomas was on furlough from 1827 until his death at Thames Ditton on 19 May 1838. He was married to Jane Jenkins in Sumatra on 8 Sep 1796.
