The bell-topped shako worn by British officers of the 1st Bengal Light Cavalry adopted this design for the badge on the front. It is gilt with a silver hobnail pattern filling the arms of the Maltese cross, or cross pattée. The gilt edges of the cross are matt gilt with burnished edges. The centre is a domed silver circle with a gilt roped edge and a garter within a wreath. The garter is inscribed BENGAL LIGHT CAVALRY and there is a floreated number 1 in the centre. The badge was topped with a gilt crown but there is no sign that it was attached to the cross. The badge introduced in 1836 replaced the star-shaped badge worn previously.
