The History of Clan Macpherson (1947) includes Colonel Alexander Kilgour Macpherson of Pitmain MVO, senior Chieftain of the Clan Macpherson. He was educated at Sandhurst and commissioned into the Indian Army on 9 Sep 1908. He was posted to the 12th Pioneers (Khelat-i-Ghilzie Regiment). In the First World War he was a lieutenant, severely wounded at Festubert in Nov 1914, and later served on the North-West Frontier, including the campaigns in Waziristan and the Marri Field Force.
On 16 Feb 1932 he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and appointed Commandant of the 1st Battalion Bombay Pioneers. He was married twice: first in Feb 1919 to Margaret Moore, his cousin, who died on 3 Oct 1920 in childbirth; and secondly to Margaret Crowley on 25 April 1924. Colonel Macpherson served in the Second World War in India, Eritrea and Abyssinia.
He retired to a small house in Kingussie on the old Pitmain property. The photo was taken in 1928 when he was the British officer in charge of the King’s Indian Orderly Officers in London.
