Captain Martin Hailes won these medals while serving in the 10th BLC in 1842 and 1843. They were auctioned by Dix Noonan Webb on 22 Jan 2022. The left hand medal ‘Cabul 1842’ is inscribed on the rim with his name and regiment, the obverse having Queen Victoria’s head and VICTORIA VINDEX on each side. The right hand Gwalior Star has MAHARAJPOOR 1843 on the silver centre, inscribed on the back with Hailes’ name and regiment. The bronze star was made from captured guns. The ribbons are described as rainbow, watered, Military Ribbon of India. The miniature portrait of Captain Hailes shows him wearing these medals prior to 1850, the year of his death.
