George Becher was born on 1 Sep 1780. He first served in the 3rd BNC in 1795 and transferred to the 5th as a lieutenant on 29 May 1800. On 26 July 1802 he transferred to the Governor General’s Bodyguard, until 12 Mar 1907. He was ADC to the Governor-General on 14 Dec 1805 and appointed Deputy Agent for camels and grain on 12 Mar 1807. From Feb 1810 he was in the Commissariat Department and rose to the rank of major, as from 1 Sep 1818, and on furlough from 1819 to 1821. He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel on 1 May 1824 and transferred to the 6th BLC on 12 Feb 1825. He commanded the 6th at the siege of Bhurtpore, but later that year transferred to the 3rd BLC, on 18 Sep 1826. He then commanded the 10th in 1827 and was promoted to Colonel on 3 May 1829. He transferred to the 8th on 15 Aug 1829 and was then on furlough c1830 until 22 Oct 1832. He moved to the 2nd BLC from 27 Oct 1832, then was Colonel of the 5th BLC from 30 Sep 1834, the 7th BLC from 20 Aug 1835 and the 4th BLC. He was on furlough again from 14 Oct 1837 but died at sea, on the Reliance, on 15 Nov 1837.
He was married twice. First to Harriet Barclay, on 10 Aug 1807, at Patna. Two of their sons were Captain George Richard Prendergast Becher (1808-1846) in the Native Infantry, and Captain Henry Murray Becher (1810-1884) also an officer in the Native Infantry. He secondly married Harriot Gildart and they had at least two sons, General Arthur Mitford Becher KCB (1816-1887), and General Septimus Harding Becher (1817-1908)
