This photo, in the collection at the National Portrait Gallery, was taken in 1860 by Felice Beato. Hope Grant held the rank of lieutenant-general at this time, shortly after the horrors of the Indian Mutiny. He had been very prominent in the siege of Delhi, the march to Cawnpore and the relief of Lucknow. The harsh conditions of fighting during the height of the Indian summer, and the privations of sleepless nights and constant vigilance have taken their toll on his appearance. Grant is dressed in a loose frock which bears little resemblance to military uniform. His cap, however, is that of a general officer, but having gold braid crossing over the top as worn by officers of lancer regiments in undress.
