The British Empire and its effect on Plymouth

View of Plymouth from Mount Edgcumbe

This painting by W. Dubusc was painted in 1680. It therefore shows the area before Plymouth Dock was created. You can clearly see St. Andrews Church and the new Citadel with the walled town of Plymouth behind them. You can also make out Stonehouse, but there is no Plymouth Dock or Devonport yet. Edgcumbe House can be seen to the left. It is interesting to see how busy the Hamoaze was even before the dock was constructed.
